Can You Refill an Old Propane Tank? The 12-Year Recertification Rule

DOT requires propane tank recertification 12 years after manufacture, then every 5 years. Expired tanks cannot be refilled.

Recertification cost: $40-60. New 20lb tank: $30-50. If you're on the fence, replacement is often the better value.

How to Check Your Tank's Age

Step 1: Find the collar stamp

Look at the metal collar (ring) at the top of the tank, around the valve. You'll see a stamp in the format MM YY.

04 18= April 2018 manufacture date

Add 12 years: this tank is valid for refill until April 2030. After that, recertify or replace.

Step 2: Check for recertification stamp

If the tank has been recertified, there will be an additional stamp with an E prefix:

E 04 30= recertified April 2025, valid until April 2030

OPD Valve Check

Since April 1998, all new propane cylinders up to 40lb must have an OPD (Overfill Prevention Device) valve. Most refill stations will refuse tanks without OPD valves.

OPD Compliant
Triangular valve handle

Three-sided grip on the valve wheel. This is the post-1998 standard. Tank is OPD-equipped and can be refilled if not expired.

No OPD
Round or T-shaped handle

Pre-1998 valve design. This tank predates the OPD mandate and is almost certainly expired (over 27 years old). Replace it.

Recertify or Replace?

OptionCostBest when...
Recertify$40-60Tank is in good condition, first recertification (12 years)
Exchange into new tank$20-25 (+ tank)You don't own a tank or tank is non-OPD / heavily rusted
Buy new tank$30-50Recertification costs more than replacement; tank is on second recertification

Rule of thumb: If recertification costs more than $30 and the tank is on its second recertification (17+ years old), replace it. New tanks from Manchester Tank or Flame King are $30-50 at Tractor Supply, Home Depot, or Amazon.

FAQ

Can I refill a propane tank that is over 12 years old?
No. DOT regulation 49 CFR 180.205 prohibits refilling tanks past the 12-year date without recertification. Refill stations will refuse expired tanks. Recertify ($40-60) or replace ($30-50).
How do I check my propane tank expiration date?
Look at the collar (metal ring) at the top of the tank. Find the stamp in MM YY format (e.g. '04 18' = April 2018). Add 12 years for first expiry. If recertified, look for an E-prefixed stamp (e.g. 'E 04 30' = recertified April 2025, valid until April 2030).
How much does propane tank recertification cost?
Typically $40-60 at AmeriGas, Ferrellgas, or select U-Haul locations. Compare against new 20lb tanks at $30-50 at Tractor Supply, Home Depot, or Amazon. If recertification exceeds replacement cost, buy new.
What is the OPD valve and does my tank have one?
OPD (Overfill Prevention Device) is a federal safety requirement since 1998. Check your valve handle: a triangular (3-sided) handle means OPD-compliant. A round or T-shaped handle means no OPD - the tank is pre-1998 and almost certainly expired. Replace it.
